Hope to see you all there — it's going to be a fun and festive event!
I feel the need to introduce myself because it's been so long... (blows dust off keyboard)... I guess it's not too surprising that with a wee babe on the scene now, I haven't been able to keep up with blogging. How naive I was to think that I would have more time while on maternity leave! Oh, this humble pie is delicious!

Well, let's start the year off fresh! Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you all had a lovely and restful holiday filled with laughter and good times, and perhaps some quiet time curled up in a cozy nook with your favourite book and a cup of tea.

Welcome, twenty-fifteen! Twenty-fourteen sure was an epic year, and I am so excited for all to come this year. I do love this time of year for that hope-filled feeling of starting fresh; reflecting on the past year, and thinking about what you want to manifest in the months ahead. To that end, I have picked one little word. As Ali describes, it's a word to focus on, mediate on, and reflect upon as you go about your daily life. The word I've chosen is pause. Pause to take the time; make the time to really notice. Pause to recognize all the wonderful little things, and to feel gratitude. Pause to listen, instead of speak. Pause to really gather my thoughts before jumping to a conclusion. Pausing before rushing straight into the next task.

With life zooming as it does at lightning speed (how is Fletcher almost 5 months old already?!), I want to stay grounded and present in the hereness — soak up every morsel of every day — frequently take a little pause to appreciate and savour each moment.

And what an exciting year of designing and creating it has been — it is such a joy to be able to do what I love, and I am so thankful for all of your wonderful support and encouragement! Thank you so much!

And though I'm taking a bit of a break now to focus on my new little bundle, I am looking forward to many years to come!

It will never cease to amaze me how unique each and every birth story is. And how often you hear that things go differently than what had been hoped or expected. Well, our birth story is definitely not what we had planned, hoped, or expected. Rather than the natural homebirth we had planned, what resulted was a 52-hour labour: we laboured at home for 40 hours, making very little progress, then transitioned to Monfort hospital for an intervention-laden birth that I had been trying to avoid. Had you told me ahead of time how it was going to pan out, I would have been so upset, and yet, on the other side of it now, I feel so incredibly positive about the whole thing, and I realize that I did end up with the empowering birthing experience I was hoping for.

First of all, I was overdue by two weeks, which I hadn't mentally prepared for, and was very emotionally challenging. The waiting was hard. Digging deep to find patience every day, and trusting that things would happen in their own time was hard. Having the threat of induction looming over us was hard.

When I finally did go into labour I didn't believe it. We were walking over to our friend's house to go to a movie in the park (Gnomeo and Juliet!), when I began feeling some painful cervical spasmy-crampy type sensations (which I had felt off and on in the previous weeks), but I just dismissed them as cramps. Until they started developing into timeable pains that were about a minute long. I had Mark download a contraction timer app onto his phone so I could keep track, just to see if there was any sort of pattern. And sure enough, over the next several hours they kept up, and were spaced anywhere from five to nine minutes apart, so that by the end of the movie I realized I was in fact in labour!

And continued to have contractions for the next 40 hours... waiting for the contractions to be 4 minutes apart so that we could call the midwives. But that never happened — they remained spaced anywhere from 5 to 9 minutes apart...

Mark was a phenomenal birth partner, helping me through the contractions with hip compressions, swaying, and other various comfort measures; guiding me to maintain low moaning tones and deep breaths; and making sure I ate and drank between contractions, even though I had lost my appetite. We tried to distract ourselves with movies and midnight walks under the supermoon, but it was long and exhausting. The midwife came to the house twice to check on me, and it was so defeating to learn that I had only dilated to about 2 cm, though I was fully effaced.

After about 20 hours I developed a painful muscle-stitch spasm pain in the left side of my stomach—not unlike the round ligament spasms I'd been getting throughout pregnancy—except this pain quickly became unbearable (sometimes even worse than the contractions), and did not stop for the next 20 hours. And unfortunately, the only poses that gave me any relief at all (child's pose), are just the type of poses that slow down labour (because the downward tilt shifts the baby's weight off of the cervix). By Monday morning, I could barely stand the constant pain, and I suddenly felt very ok about the idea of going to the hospital. I didn't want to go through another full day and night of that. I wanted to have the baby that day.

The midwife met us at the clinic at 7:30 am, where we did a non-stress test to see how the baby was doing (perfectly fine), and how far I had progressed (3.5 cm), and to discuss our options. We could go to Monfort and (1) get some narcotics to help me sleep, and we could go back home and keep labouring at home, or (2) I could get an epidural, and probably pitocin, and have the baby at the hospital. It was at this point that the thought of going back home to "keep trying" became hugely unappealing, and I was suddenly very ok with a hospital birth and an epidural, which I had previously not wanted for myself at all. But imagining how the birth would go was very different from the reality of how it was going, and at that point after 40 hours, an epidural seemed not only reasonable, but compassionate and possibly wise.

So we went to triage at Monfort, where I was given Nubain to try and cut the pain of my side stitch, but unfortunately it didn't really stop the pain, just took the edge off and made me a little less miserable. They also started me on an IV, and had some blood work done (by the end of the night I felt like a pin cushion!). After we transferred to our room, I still had to labour through some very painful contractions before the anaesthesiologist was available to administer the epidural, and at this point I was less able to handle the contractions with control, and I began shaking and whimpering from the pain of the contractions combined with the terrible stitch pain. I was not a happy camper, and was very ready for the epidural by the time it arrived! And then, oh, sweet relief! It took away my stitch pain almost immediately, and then the pain from the contractions faded after a few minutes, and I was finally able to relax and get some rest.

Then they began the pitocin to get the contractions going, and my body responded well and progressed through active labour while I was resting. And also important, Mark was finally able to get some rest too, after coaching me and standing by my side tirelessly for the previous 40+ hours. About 6 hours later, when it came time to push, I was well rested and ready for the physical challenge, and actually excited! It was finally time to meet our baby! Mark had one leg, and our amazing midwife Marie-Éve had the other, and with their amazing direction and coaching, I pushed our beautiful Fletcher into the world at 11:32 pm, after an hour and a half of pushing. It was hard, physical work, but I gave it everything I had, and I found it hugely rewarding.

It was such an incredible moment when his hot, tiny, wriggling body was placed onto my stomach—complete and utter disbelief and intense, blindingly love-filled joy. I started crying immediately, and since then, just looking at him makes me cry in love, gratitude, amazement, and disbelief. Mark and I made this tiny creature? He lived and grew in my belly? Unbelieveable! How did I ever get so incredibly lucky?! I am eternally grateful.

We enjoyed skin-to-skin contact for an hour or so, tried some breastfeeding (whoa, I'm a food source now!), then they weighed and measured him (6lb, 13 oz and 20 inches), and after about 3 hours, after I could show that I could walk and pee on my own (with the epidural you are catheterized), we were given the green light to go home. You're going to let me take this tiny human being home?! Am I ready for this? My goodness, nothing can prepare you—not even 42 weeks of pregnancy—for the huge weight of instant and irrevocable parental responsibility. I don't remember that first night at all, but I'm pretty sure we didn't sleep at all—just watched him all night long and kept checking to make sure he was still breathing (still do).

These first two weeks have been intense and overwhelming (this post sums it up perfectly)—life with a newborn is scary and so new—learning each other's cues and signals, and trying not to feel like you're doing everything wrong, and being so worried about every little thing! But we've had a couple of good nights now, and I think maybe, just maybe the shock of the newness is subsiding ever so slightly, and we are very slowly beginning to find some sort of groove (knock on wood!). We're all beginning to figure out this new life together, and it is good, but the sleeplessness is hard, for sure.

We are eternally grateful for the strong ring of support around us, and for all the help with meals and dishes that have been pouring in from our amazing friends and family. And also hearing about other's experiences with a newborn helps us negotiate the reality of this newness, and helps us feel that all our fears and concerns and emotions are perfectly normal! There truly is no transition period—as soon as that baby enters the world, it is full-on.

But oh, do I love him so much. I can't get enough of his little coos and gurgles and sleepy smiles (I don't care if they are just gas smiles, they're so effing cute!). The range of facial expressions he wears (both while asleep and awake) is amazing! From happiness, to furrowed brow, to calm contentedness, to seemingly profound distress, and back again in a flash! I could go on and on—there is always more to say—but since it's taken me two weeks to type this much, I should post it while I have a chance!
He was born to our joyous arms on Monday, August 11th at 11:32pm. We are deliriously in love, and can't stop watching his incredible range of expressions and listening to all his adorable coos and gurgles. And just like that, life is forever changed. I'm working on writing out his birth story in between feedings and trying to sleep, before I forget, and so that I can share it with you. More soon!

And now, until August 10 at midnight (Pacific Time), you can take advantage of free shipping worldwide!

Amberlea Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09860522152789826229noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2345066367875532254.post-57474095655838629462014-08-01T12:33:00.001-04:002014-08-01T12:46:52.022-04:00Elevated veggie patch and garden goodnessI have been meaning to post a garden update for some time, and since this baby shows no sign of arriving (currently 3 days overdue), I now have opportunity to do so!

After such a positive start to the seedlings we began indoors in April, most of them seemed to grow too tall, too fast, and became weak and scraggly, flopping over into dead, or... mostly-dead status. Some of them survived being transplanted, but most of our success is from direct-seeding into these beautiful elevated gardens that Mark built in late spring. The structures are made from cedar, and the outer "wabi-sabi" boards were scrounged from around our neighbourhood on garbage night. Hooray for upcycling and saving things from landfill!

He built them for a number of reasons: to make weeding easier, avoid bunny problems (not that we've really had a problem there), and hopefully alleviate our previous earwig problems (so far, so good)! Unfortunately they haven't stopped our biggest enemy: the squirrel. A perennial problem, this year they're just being malicious and contemptibly obnoxious — rather than an occasional bite out of a zucchini or cucumber, they're going straight to the stalk to take the plant down at it's source. And they seemed truly offended by our potato plants — those were completely and ruthlessly destroyed. And they stole our first (and so far only) tiny watermelon fruit! Jerks! So we've had to cover the gardens with netting, which makes harvesting and weeding tricky, and if the plants grow through the netting, it makes for a rather tangled mess... but at least our veggies don't get eaten.

I've been enjoying picking my daily greens: kale and lettuce salads with fresh dill and/or basil; kale for crackers; kale for smoothies... I find as long as you put in a frozen banana, a bit of maple syrup, an apple, or an orange for sweetness, you can get a lot of greens in a smoothie and still have it be quite palatable. And I generally prefer smoothies over juicing so I get all the fibre and none of the waste/cleanup. Some favourite combos of late:

kale, cucumber, basil, orange, lime, frozen banana, chia seed, hemp seed, turmeric, cayenne pepper

kale, celery, carrot, apple, orange, lime, basil, mint, chia seed, hemp seed, ginger

And our grapes are going to be very prolific this year! Last year was the first time since Mark planted them four years earlier that we had any grapes, and we were thrilled to get the four bunches we did. This year there are too many bunches to count! Once they start to ripen and entice the birds, we'll have to net these too — though I do think we'll have enough to share this year!
I made a double-fold binding as per the method described in my cousin, Mary Elizabeth Kinch's excellent book, Small Blocks, Stunning Quilts. I can't speak to other techniques, since this is my first completed quilt, but I found this worked so well, and really made for a lovely finished edge. And had the added benefit of requiring some very zen hand-stitching, which we all know I love!

I am so thrilled with this bright and summery quilt; now just to wait patiently for the little one to arrive, so I can swaddle him up in it!
They won the whole thing! This is a big win for Glide, and will hopefully contribute to a good seeding position for Regionals in a few weeks.

I watched the games on Sunday, so I got to see their epic win, but on Saturday I went into the city and spent the day walking around the Plateau neighbourhood (my favourite area of Montréal, and where I did my Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training in the fall): café hopping, lunching at Aux Vivres, and just enjoying the day! It was glorious! And when I was walking back to the metro, I happened upon a street festival celebrating all the amazing murals along Boulevard Saint-Laurent. Only in Montreal :)
So happy to be home and to have had such an amazing time away, we were filled with hopes and plans for the future. And now, a year later, my Etsy shop is a reality, I've been teaching yoga for a year, and we're expecting a baby in less than two months. My gosh, what a difference a year makes. Life is so good.
It was lovely, the undergrowth still low to the ground, making a lovely carpet for the towering trees above. The hoards and hoards of mosquitos on the other hand...

So when we crossed one of the secondary roads in the park, we decided to take it on the way back instead. And on this short stretch of road we saw more wildlife than we did in the forest! A stunning swallowtail butterfly, a deer, a beaver, and a turtle laying eggs!

It was a great show at Christmas, and judging by the list of talented vendors, you won't want to miss this one either!

I've got some new designs that I'm excited to premiere: a Gnome Home, complete with Gnome stuffie, a Barn that comes with farm animal finger puppets, and three new hand puppets to introduce you to: Raccoon, Bear, and Fox! And, rumour has it that the puppets will now also be available as kits, so you can make your own!
Since we were so close to the city, we made it an extra long weekend so we could get into the city and explore. I can't believe I haven't been there before — it's not really that far from Ottawa, about a 7-hour drive. And what a great city! Such history, beautiful architecture, great eats, very walkable, and right on the ocean! We walked and walked and walked, exploring some of the sights on the Freedom Trail, eating at Quincy Hall, and relaxing on the grass in Boston Commons. Our B&B was across the Charles River in Somerville, so we were also within walking distance of Cambridge and Harvard's beautiful campus.

We had a near hiccup with our accommodation: our B&B owner accidentally double-booked our room... so he offered us a smaller, less-nice room in his house for free. And after so many unpleasant accommodation experiences in Asia, of course this room was perfectly fine (albeit quite hot without AC, and the bed was a bit too short for Mark, and we both hit our heads numerous times on the low-angle ceilings), but we didn't argue him refunding our money! More money for chowder!

I think after this short trip and the one we took to the Berkshires a couple of years ago, that I love Massachussetts; in fact, all of New England — such beautiful states, and I'm so glad they're so close!
First up: the Gnome Home, now in the shop! I'm really excited about this one — I had a lot of fun illustrating all the travel-themed details inside, and all the flora on the outside.

The permanent home of the traveling Gnome! When he's not off galavanting the globe, Gnome calls this forest dwelling Home. Surrounded by flowers, mushrooms, and sheltered by a thick moss roof — Gnome curls up by his fireplace, reading travel books, and getting inspired for his next adventure (suitcase always at the ready)!
A festival that was established in 1953, after Canada granted safe haven to the Dutch Royal Family during the German Occupation of the Netherlands during the second World War. In thanks, tulips have been given to Canada every year since.

The National Capital Commission (NCC) plants lush, dense gardens of tulips all over the city, but the largest display is in Commissioner's Park, beside Dow's Lake, where nearly 300,000 tulips are in bloom! It is a stunning effect, and people visit from all over the world to come and see them.

A lot of what I make is directly tangible from the outset — the Wee Fabric Houses that I make from upcycled thrifted fabrics come together physically, piece at a time. On the other hand, the houses and puppets that I make from fabric custom-printed with my illustrations have quite a lengthy process behind them before there's anything physical.

I've been working away on some new house and puppet designs, but since it will be about a month before my latest fabric order arrives, I thought I'd share a bit about my process, and give you some sneak peeks on what's coming!

When I have an idea for a new project, I begin doing some preparatory sketches, and then move toward refining those drawings. Each piece for each puppet or house is drawn separately using template pieces that I created for myself, but if I've got a new house shape in mind, then I create a new pattern to work from. For instance, my Japanese Teahouse and Chickadee House use the same pattern (except of course for the hole/door in the side of the birdhouse!), but for my Gingerbread House, I changed the width of the house and the pitch of the roof, to suit what I was trying to achieve.

After I'm happy with my pencil drawings, I trace them with a marker-like pen, which gives me a looser, more expressive quality of linework. I then scan these tracings, and begin the process of colouring on the computer. Through a series of layers with various digital brushes, I build up tone and texture, often reworking areas repeatedly until I'm happy with how it's coming together. Each new house takes about a week and a half to finish illustrating, and each puppet about 4 days.

I then prepare my files for uploading to Spoonflower, fitting my pattern pieces as efficiently as possible (like Tetris pieces!) into the 42" by 36" yard dimensions. After submitting my order, I *patiently* wait the 3-4 weeks for my fabric order to arrive, then cut out all the pieces and sew them together into happy little puppets and houses, and voila!
